Discovering Our Values & Living With Purpose

So many of us are wired to the social media, to the endless reserve of information on the Internet, and to having our every question answered by Ms. Google at any moment! Am I right?

Recently I had a client pondering over some real chewy questions. He felt lost in this realm of information overload, didn’t know what really mattered to him and believed that he was just drifting like a leaf through his life. So he asked me THE question, “Preet, what’s the purpose of my life?”

Well, I’m way, Way, WAY far from being any kind of guru I told him. However, I also know that we aren’t just put on this planet and given this gift of life just so that we can go get university degrees, work at a job, pay the mortgage and bills and then suffer an illness that would slowly lead to the end of our life. No we are not!

So I asked him to think of an alternative question – How can you live your life purposefully? A long silent pause pursued. Soon to be followed by some intense learning about how we can live more purposefully based on our values.

Many people think that values are ethics or morals; they’re not. Values are what is important to us, what we ‘value’, and what gives us purpose. Just as organisations have values, we as individuals do too. Most people have approximately 5-7 core values that identify who they are at their core. Each person’s values are unique to that person; even if two people happen to pick the same value word, such as integrity, each person will demonstrate it differently in her/ his daily actions and language.

Values reflect who we are on a daily basis, in everything we do at home and at work – in our life. And this holistic approach helps us be a leader in all aspects of our life, not just in our careers.

So why do we need to know our values?

Well, values give us our sense of purpose. When we align with our values on a daily basis, we have more energy and feel more fulfilled because we are leading from what’s important to us. When we don’t align with our values, we feel less authentic and become demotivated about our daily lives.

I like to use a metaphor of a tree here: values are our roots that keep us grounded in what’s important to us. The strength of the values determines the strength of the trunk, branches, leaves and fruit from year to year. A strong tree supports the ecosystem around it; like an individual with strong values supports their personal, family, social and work culture.

In today’s episode of Preet TV – Discovering Our Values & Living With Purpose – I’ll be sharing 3 interesting and simple ways to connect with what is truly important to you and how you can begin to live what’s important to you.

Your peace of mind or inner peace comes about when you act within your value system, which includes your values and beliefs. It is about doing what you really value and thats why it’s especially important you know what your value system is and respect it. Your character is a combination of your value system and personality, it is reflected in your behaviour and actions. And your personal happiness or satisfaction is a result of what your value system is made up of.

Your life has purpose. Your story is important. Your dreams count. Your voice matters. You were born to make an impact. Do you believe that?

Now talk to me. Do you know what your values are? Have you ever had them seriously challenged? Have they changed?

Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. You never know whom you might inspire!
