How To Be Authentically Persuasive

Fall, autumn is finally here in Chicago. The wind crispier, the temperatures lower, golden leaves everywhere, yet the sky is still bright blue!

I’ve been busy helping my daughter organize her upcoming fundraiser for the two charities that we support. Missy has been learning the art of persuasion – an intense exercise to ensure optimum ticket sales in order to hit her target!

Do you ever wish you could be more persuasive?

Whether it’s within a business context or your personal life (like getting your family on board with something you want), understanding how to influence others in a genuine and authentic way is an invaluable skill to have in life.

It can be frustrating when you believe in your idea, product or project but struggle to convince others of its importance, right?

There’s a myth about persuasion, that it is manipulation, which feels inauthentic to most of us. But authentic persuasion is really about understanding a genuine need, and addressing it in a way that accepts and responds to others’ points of view.

I believe that the highest use of persuasion is not manipulating others to get what you want. And it isn’t about pushing them to buy your product, service or idea. Rather, it is joining up with them to help them get what they want.

Authentic persuasion happens when the other person stops worrying about what you are going to take from them and gets excited about what you can give them. And that can only happen when the other person knows that you have their best interest at heart and feel they can trust you. Because there is no persuasion without trust!
