How To Easily Instill Values In Our Kids

I had the privilege of celebrating my second Mother’s Day this year! How you ask? Well UK is our home and Mother’s Day there is celebrated in March, and as we living in Chicago the Mommys got all loved up yesterday on 8th May!! So my Child decided I deserved a special treat and was to be celebrated again. Honoured and privileged to be a mother!

Last July my daughter and I made a three-week trip to India and used our time volunteering with two organizations that I have been supporting – Unique Home For Girls (a home for abandoned girls in Punjab being run by a woman who has dedicated her entire life to the cause) and Akanksha Foundation (an organization with a mission to provide children from low-income communities with a high-quality education, enabling them to maximize their potential and transform their lives).

Being a mother I believe that it’s my responsibility to show my child what it’s like to live life with a sense of purpose, integrity and conviction.

As parents, I feel it is our responsibility to instill the right values in our children. That’s often easier said than done, because teaching values (e.g. respect, kindness, honesty, courage, perseverance, self discipline, compassion, generosity, dependability) takes time – a scarce commodity for many parents today. As a result, outside influences like peer pressure and the entertainment industry (internet, television, movies, video games and music) are having a greater affect on children, shaping their perspectives more than ever before.

What’s a parent to do?

I believe that we need to make the time to be with our kids AND to make that time really count. Having conversations that really matter on a regular basis, weaving lessons about values into our interactions will really help to address key issues that they will face in their life.

This was one of the main reasons for the three-week trip with my daughter to India last year. Since our return, she has shared how this experience has changed her perspective on life, herself, and others. As a family we’ve even set up a foundation: Wish To Learn, geared up to raise funds to support our two charities by organising fundraisers. Last year my daughter organised a Bollywood Night here in Chicago and raised $8,000!

Remember, your children will follow your example more than your advice. So HOW you go about instilling values is just as important as what you instill.

In this episode of Preet TV – How to Easily Instill Values In Our Kids – I’ll be sharing 3 strategies you can use that promote co-operation and makes everyone feel good.

Let’s play!

Lead by example. Your kids will unconsciously mimic the way you talk and act. And if they see you behaving poorly, they may call you on it. That’s awesome! Don’t take it as an insult to your ego when they call you on bad behaviour – take it as a sign that your teachings are working – then take the leadership role and explain how you’re going to make amends.

More than anything, kids want time with you – quality time. The more one-on-one, unhurried time and attention you can lavish on your kids, the more they will naturally develop values that will serve them well in life.

Now I’d love to hear from you. Do you find your kids ignore good habits, behaviours or values? Do you know what their unique values are? What do you do to instill good values?

Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below. I’d love to hear about them.

If you found this episode helpful, please do pass it along to your friends or anyone who you feel would benefit from watching it. I’d really appreciate that.
