Self-Respect: How To Own It

We all know that life is full of the old and the new, the good and the bad, the ups and the downs, the light and the dark, the climbing up and the falling down, the winning and the losing.. and everything else in between!

Well, that is life. Full of experiences, the learning, the ever changing.

What I’d like to know from you is how you manage to travel through, with a suitcase full of all these different experiences. What is your perception of YOU?

I’ve been going through some major changes in my own life over the past few months. There have been times when I’ve had to think long and hard about my achievements (and some failures), what I had to forsake and work hard on, where do I want to go next and how do I get there. And believe me when I say it’s been tough, though not impossible!

I notice a pattern as I flow through this process and that’s why I posed the question – What is your perception of YOU? Because to be honest, the pattern I see takes me back to what I believe about the decisions I’ve made and how I feel about myself. And one key signpost that keeps popping up at every crossroad in my travels is SELF-RESPECT.

I define self-respect as ‘having admiration, pride and confidence in your own self.’ I also believe that you’ve gotta respect yourself in order to gain respect from others. When you respect yourself you are consciously concerned with what you say and how you behave. And I’m sure you would have noticed that others tend to treat you the way you treat yourself. Right?

Bottom line: How much self-respect you have for yourself depends on how much you value yourself. Self-respect and self-worth comes from one thing – thinking that you are worthy.

Aaah!! Many of us will need to do some work here, I know I had to! In order to begin to change what’s inside you, how you think about yourself – you have to become more loving and respectful toward yourself. In your thoughts, you’ve got to cultivate an inner voice and attitude that’s 100% on your team. Imagine an inner self that only supports, loves and respects you.

Self-respect demonstrates that you value your dignity and worthiness as a human being. You tend to treat yourself well with healthy boundaries in place, and this enables you to treat others in the same way. What’s the point in leading a life with the premise – you punch me, and I punch you back. I don’t believe it’s good for one’s self-respect to be a punching bag. Stand up. Have a voice. RESPECT YOURSELF.
