Stop Reacting. Start Living

September comes to an end in another day! I mean where has 2015 gone? Life seems to be passing by in the blink of an eye. Sounds cliché right? But it’s true.

I came across an interesting quote by Eleanor Roosevelt recently; you may know it already. It read, “In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.”

What really speaks to me is this idea of taking 100% responsibility for one’s life. As individuals, and even as society, we’re so quick to assign blame and pull out excuses as to why something did or didn’t happen. All that finger pointing!

Our life, our past, along with its inevitable issues and challenges, the choices we made, and the consequences we faced – contribute to who we are today.

Ok, ok.. I hear some of you saying we are the recipients of external forces outside our control, but may I make one thing very clear – we do have control over our reactions and responses in how we handle what life and it’s inhabitants send our way!

I believe it’s essential for all of us to stop reacting and actually respond consciously. When we’re in reaction mode – acting without evaluation, without taking the time to see if our actions are serving our greater objectives, we run the risk of wasting a good deal of time and therefore our lives. I never agreed with the precept of – time is money, for me it’s always been – time is life!

What if we could step back and see our lives with calm and proper perspective? What if we aligned ourselves to living our core values? What if we could stop reacting and start responding to the various situations in our lives?

The word respond comes from the old French word respondre, which means ‘to answer’. And to answer implies thought – something is asked of us, we consider it, then respond based on the present situation.

On the other hand, reactions tend to be remnants of our pasts. We are repeating an action. The source of these actions for many of us at least, has little to do with the present moment. It’s most likely based on some previous reference point. For example, how do you react to Mondays? Are you rearing to go or do you find yourself wishing for an extra Sunday! And how far back on your timeline was this reaction born?

Today’s episode of Preet TV – Stop Reacting. Start Living – I’ll be sharing 3 simple tips for times when you find yourself constantly reacting to life in ways that don’t serve your personal or professional goals.

Right then, time to hit the play button and get into response mode because you’re choosing to stop reacting and start living!

Life is a series of events and experiences. Each one is an opportunity for us to grow and become a better person. So take on each challenge with fresh eyes. Reacting in the same way to new experiences won’t get you where you want to be personally or professionally.

Now I’d like to hear from you. Are you stuck somewhere without a map? Is someone else driving your car?

Comment below and share your thoughts. I’d love to hear about them.
